Movie Dune: Part 2 (2024)

Sort of. It partially depends on if you consider the continuation novels by Frank Herbert's son Brian Herbert to be canonical.

In the original Dune novel by Frank Herbert, Margot and her husband plot to have her seduce and be impregnated by Feyd-Rautha. Margot is sure she will succeed because she believes Feyd lusts after her, but it is never actually confirmed if she does.

In Brian Herbert's Paul of Dune, Margot succeeded and had a daughter by Feyd named Marie who
tries to assassinate Paul but is stopped and killed by Alia.
Totally do not recall her doing this but I do seem to remember the fenrings at Feyds birthday fight I think. I'm OK with it in the movie.

Nothing as satisfying as seeing at the end the Bene Gesserite Reverend Mother's fury and despair that a kwitzatz haterach was born and she has even less than zero control over him. That was seemed to be left out of this version I think.

Lady Jessica made no friends.

Best movie of 2024

Seen it twice, imax 70MM was well worth it

Saw it last night finally in IMAX. Very good movie. Just wish it was more of a struggle with the battles instead of just an absolute steam rolling everytime.

Have you read the book? In the final battle they absolutely did steamroll them. The Imperial Army and Harkonnens were completely caught off guard by the amount of Fremen and their skill

No haven't read the book. But it was every sort of fight/conflict in the movie was a total steamroll of the Harkonnens which was a mirror opposite of what happened in the first movie.

you really fail to grasp story telling, don't you?

In the first movie they weren't fighting Fremen. Only one they fought that was equal to a Fremen skill was Duncan Idaho who absolutely did kick their ass and they had to overwhelm him with sheer numbers.

Many times in the novel it is mentioned how the Harkonnens believe there to be just a few thousand Fremen out in the desert and they were just crazy spiritual savages. Scouting report was really really wrong so it would be expected to be a massacre

But in Dune 2 there was a line where Paul said the Fremen had been fighting the Harkenen for decades but his firmly had been fighting them for centuries or something along those lines.

Then in Dune 1 when Paul amd his mom go into that one Fremen lab area after crash landing in the desert the Harkenen arrive and clear out the place including Fremen and Paul's one buddy who was training him. So then fast forward to Dune 2, even before the large fight at the end, every sort of confrontation incident in Dune 2 was a total Wipeout of no real resistance form the Harlene even if it was a small numbers attack of Freman. So with the line about them fighting for decades that it would have been a sort of balanced back and forth of anything if not Harkenen really overpowering Fremen in small encounters. So for it to be so one sided the entire Dune 2 kind of took me out of it just a little bit.

The only time in the movie where I had any sense of danger/not knowing how it was going to turn out was when his mom drank the Water of Life pr whatever it was called.

Also curious but going to put this question in spoiler tags.

Edit. Spoiler tags don't work on the new board, just makes everything disappear so do not scroll down and read the below post if you haven't seen the movie.

SPOILERS BELOW

Why didn't Paul or his mom have any of the very distinct physical features of the Harkenen? Even the women on that planet are completely white skin and no hair. Is it just because the special type of whatever the mom is that it would completely win out genetically over another humanoid species? Or is how the Harkenen look completely a creation of the movies and there was nobphysical description of them in the books. Also did the fat leader of the Harkenen have any knowledge that she was his daughter?

The distinct physical features of the Harkonnens in this movie were invented by this movie and were not used in the books, nor in previous adaptations of the books.

Baron Harkonnen did not know Jessica was his daughter until the moment of his death: in the book, he isn't killed by Paul, but instead by Paul's sister Alia, and she mocks him by calling him "Grandfather" before she kills him.

I suppose the movie could explain the physical differences with having to do with the infrared sun for Giedi Prime. Now that's not really how genetics work but maybe they can come up with some bullshit sci fi reasoning that all of them are born human looking but if you live on Giedi Prime for X amount of time, you end up looking like that

As for the overwhelming force of the Fremen, it is because of the religious fervor brought on by the appearance of Little Mouse. The Fremen were merely waiting for the Deliverer to arrive to bring them to a fever pitch. It's a religious allegory.

They were fighting but never with any real organization. They were all very independent of each other. As long as the Harkonnens stayed out of the deep desert they didn't do much. It was, like @Kburjr said, not until the arrival of a "chosen" one that they were able to unite under one banner and truly show their strength

In the raid in Dune 1 the Fremen pretty much just retreated out. Duncan Idaho (the man you referred to as Paul's teacher) was kicking their ass but eventually got overwhelmed. Those were also Sardaukar, not Harkonnens.

Easiest example I can give you in movie terms, imagine in the film 300, if the Persian army marched on the Spartans expecting their small band of 300 soldiers and there was suddenly 100 times more than that. How do you think that would have gone for the Persians?

But what but them bring. And hairless creatures. Is that not genetic?

This only explains the end battle.

Not them wiping out the Harkenen in command and his troops so quickly that he ran back in fear to his helicopter, all kf them so utterly incapable of putting up Amy resistance in their attack.

Definitely one of those movies you're well served to see on the big screen. It's impressive.

No 3rd Stage Guild Navigators.

Epic, well done, beautifully executed, yet lacking.

The nature of the Spice and its effects were not developed. The effect/impact of cutting off Spice production was not explained.

The Spice was transformative, changing its long term Guild users into worm like beings giving them power to "fold" space, thus making interplanetary travel possible throughout the Empire.

In explaining the Spice and its effects, the 1984 version was better.
