Formula One

New season ready to start. So far from what I've seen in testing:

Red Bull is Red Bull, still looking the strongest
Ferrari looking good, but may beholding back
Mercedes looks ok, but may also me holding back some
Williams looks improved
Aston Martin getting a lot of attention for their performance.
Alpine looks about the same but many think they are sandbagging
Alfa Romeo and Alpha Tauri both kind of meh
Haas looks better
McLaren looks horrible

So is McLaren orange Tennessee orange??

Red Bull better than everyone easily.

Mercedes slipping back, even Hamilton said they’re 4th best right now. McLaren looks really bad. Astons are surprisingly quick. Glad to see Alonso get a podium. I think all us older guys are rooting for him.

Gasly from last to 9th. Curious how he would’ve done if he had good qualifying.

Williams in the points, American Logan Sergeant was the best of the rookies even though he’s been the least touted.

I'll wait for the reviews, it's gotten horribly worse every season. Manufacturing drama and issues that don't exist. I don't blame Verstappen for not participating.
Can you expand on this a little bit? I'm a F1 novice.

After the first season, maybe the 2nd, Verstappen refused to participate because the producers would show things drivers or others said out of context and/or edit the show so there appeared to be feuds, drama etc. Season 4 was probably the worst for that, they made it seem Norris and Ricciardo hated each other even though they were teammates, and it was the opposite they got along great. There’s even a YouTube video of Norris reacting to DTS and saying “that’s wrong”, “that’s out of context” “ that’s not what happened” etc. I guess the drivers got pissed about it and maybe all threatened to not participate like Max did which would have ended the show basically.

The first season made Max look like Snidley Whiplash twirling his mustache and being a complete asshole that didn’t get along with anyone, which isn’t true, he gets along great with everyone. He’s just very blunt when he speaks and doesn’t beat around the bush. Like most Dutch people.

I guess they assured the drivers that they wouldn’t do that anymore and Max was back for Season 5, though not in it too much.

If you watch the whole series of DTS, you’ll see how they tried to manufacture drama.

So if I jump into F1 fandom, am I gonna catch hell if I cheer for the back markers/underdogs?

Not at all, actually the opposite.

It's kind of like when new basketball fans cheer for Golden State, or when new baseball fans jump on the Yankees etc. Basically, it's better to not be a bandwagon fan and jump on the top teams

Personally, while I do respect Verstappen, I can't stand Red Bull, same with Hamilton and Russell, I like them both as drivers but don't cheer for Mercedes. I typically cheer for the underdogs, this past race I was happy to see Williams do much better than last year (also I like Albon) and I like Gasly so I was cheering for him too.

Aston Martin looks like they'll be a contender this year, and I've always liked Alsonso so they're a decent pick too.

I think you'll see in F1, a lot of people cheer for particular drivers rather than teams. A good example is Verstappen, at many of the races you'll see a lot of Dutch fans cheering for him, but not really for Red Bull. Same with many of the British drivers (Hamilton, Russell, Norris) and Spanish drivers (Alonso and Sainz). Leclerc is also very popular overall and a lot of folks like him but not necessarily Ferrari.

I’m a Verstappen fan and a Red Bull fan just because it’s easy money betting Verstappen to win every race and the drivers championship and Red Bull to win the Constructors, and if they’re -250 favorites

So were you a Hamilton fan until recently because that was even easier money.
