I used to own a re-issue of a Fender DeluxeReverb ('65). Pretty much the best amp I've ever found for playing solo jazz guitar.

Idk. This is the first boss amp I’ve owned. My son has a boss stomp box. Only pedal I have hooked into this one so far is a big muff

Have to admit. When I was shopping online I didn’t like it. Me and my son went to try out a strat, prs, and a schector and this one jumped out. Really light and smooth action. Should have picked up some strings while I was there. These stock ones suck. But the humbucker on the bridge kicks out some good distortion. Sounds really good clean

Probably add some locking tuners and new bridge in the future. Right now just getting the feel and wearing the gloss off the neck. Going to commit an hour each night to playing and hopefully get back in the groove

Enjoy knocking some shine off. I always like to pull the pick guard off my Tele when I change strings to see how much the nitro finish had aged. Unfortunately, it spent much too long in the case over the last decade.

Personally, I like a nice burst over most finishes, but I do like colors that are subtle, yet have interest under a change in light. Then you've got "clones" of famous guitars to consider, but a burst looks good on most every guitar.

As in Les Paul junior? Or just a smaller guitar in general? If the latter you might check out a Fender Mustang, it has a much shorter scale, but is still a high quality guitar and would be worth keeping regardless of whether he takes to it or not. Sure you already know anyway, just thought I would up my post count.

Half the time, I play mine unplugged. I'm just working on technique anyway, and some days I sound awful. Didn't wanna subject my family to that.

When I do plug in, I keep the gain way down because I don't wanna disturb any neighbors. (We live in a row house.)

I should probably invest in some good headphones instead of an amp

Get an irig, or any interface that will go into your phone, some decent headphones, and you can have all the sounds you’d ever want, you’ll never annoy your family, and if you ever want to record something you’re set. For a fraction of the price.

I would highly recommend getting studio monitors. They're designed more for plugging in your guitar and jamming (or recording, for that matter) than regular consumer headphones. I would seriously look at a set of Audio-Technica ATH-M30x's which can be found for under $70 USD brand new if you're looking to go the headphone route. I have a set of ATH M50x's in my studio (as well as countless other pro-studios); they're killer.​


The iRig through the phone is probably the most cost-effective/versatile method of having a virtual amp.

You have both given me much to consider. I'm using Android phones though, does the iRig work with any phone?

Just a smaller 3/4 guitar if he'd be interested. I do like LP Jrs though.

Yeah, it should. I used to use one with a Samsung. Double check the cables it comes with though if you get the HD version, but the basic one goes into the headphone jack.

I did some initial research on it, and I think it's probably more tech than I need at this point. At this stage in my journey, I'm nowhere near getting ready to record anything, and I'm so uneducated WRT effects that I think this would be wasted on me.

So I went and got a cheap 30$ pair of studio headphones that I can run out of my current amp. This will allow me to practice quietly while i'm still just trying to hit all the correct notes. Bless my family, none of them have ever complained when I sat there and ran a scale for 30 minutes.

I get that. My wife has commented on my Spider practice more than once
 
Changed out strings today and figured it would be a good time to polish the frets/ bridge/ tuners/ switches, oil the fretboard, and wipe down the body. Took the pick guard off to see how the nitro has faded over the years. Can't wait to see what another decade will do to the finish.

There are certainly imperfections, but considering it was my first build, with cutting the tele shape from a square block of alder, routing for the binding and hardware, to the sunburst finish, I'm still very pleased over a decade later.
