It's Friday, you ain't got no job, and you ain't got shit to do...

My grandfather paid for my undergrad (he had moved in with my parents and this was his way of repaying them). I got a scholarship and student loans for law school.
In my family, my generation is the first to achieve middle class. My parents and grandparents were hard working dirt poor with a strong aversion to debt. It rubbed off. I don't know if I could have borrowed to go to college. I learned about using debt as a tool while I was there but I always hated borrowing for business uses, too.

My total loans were about 12K and that included two years out-of-state.

Yes, we used typewriters back then.
Mine were $2k. We had computers. Guess being smart enough for scholarships helps.

I did pretty much every weekend from Thanksgiving through New Years. Fucking oak trees are messy.

I have a number of oak trees (mostly post oak) and they drop a shitload of acorns in the fall and early winter. No exaggeration, I have bagged up hundreds of pounds of acorns over the past couple of months.

I have a chainsaw that can alleviate your problem
That would just create a new problem. The HOA requires a certain number of trees per lot, depending on the size and location of your lot. They also specify the species of tree that you’re allowed to have. So, if I cut them down I’d just have to have new ones planted.

That's pretty specific man. With ours we are not to have trees in the front unless they are decorative like a Japanese Maple or weeping cherry that is in the flower beds

Ours is very specific. It specifies the number of trees you have to have in the front and in the back. I have a corner lot, so I have additional requirements for the side that is near the street. There’s an acceptable list of trees for main trees and decorative trees. If a tree dies, you have to replace it or you’ll get a letter.

School wouldn't cost so much if the student loans weren't available. Schools know they can charge what they do because the banks will lend it, so they do.
I agree with this. I also think our government entices us to have "good debt" which there is no such thing. The cost of a college education is ridiculous. I am working with my daughter to understand the concept that this is a business decision. When I hear HS kids talk about going away to school because they want the college experience I think their priorities are wrong. Unless you are going to an elite Ivy League school the "old alma mater" doesn't do anything for you in life. Unless you are fine with saddling yourself with huge debt kids should be looking at a school that makes the most financial sense

What does the letter say?

That's another thing about when I went to college

I remember my parents moving money around to try to hide it from schools to get that aid.

Felt like Tony Soprano hiding cash in the heating duct in our house for a few months
Kids I went to HS, their parents got a divorce for the reason. They had no marital issues it was for college.
