Oakland A's Relocating

A name change won’t make it any easier. Vegas is a destination city.

Really and truly, the best way to drum up local interest is to win, and the A’s tend to rebuild well and win above their paygrade. If they win, people will come regardless of name
Winning buys short term bandwagon fans. The moment they start losing again that stadium will be quieter than a Marlins matinee. To build a sustainable fanbase in Vegas, they're gonna need to do a little more than just win, they need to build an identity the Vegas locals will support.

It’s up to ownership to pony up so they don’t have to sell off their good players and be in a perpetual cycle of selling, rebuilding and contending for a few years. They need to sign some top free agents and extend some home grown stars.

Don’t be the Marlins, the Yankees would fall out of favor in New York if they were ran like the Marlins.

It’s gonna take a culture change and a philosophy change, but a name change is irrelevant

You're not wrong in your other points; but a name change is not irrelevant. An identity change would instantly show the locals that this franchise is now "ours" and not just someone else's trash getting dumped here.

I don’t buy that at all.

The Nationals had shit attendance until they started winning. Build a consistent winner and nobody will care what the name is

The Nats are in the 6th-highest-populated metropolitan area in the United States. The year they won the World Series they were 16th in average home attendance in MLB. They still don't have great attendance even when winning.

Vegas is the 29th-largest metro area in the US - 1/3 the size of D.C. They just got two new major pro sports franchises in the past six years and they're about to inherit a franchise in shambles that they don't even necessarily want. That franchise is gonna need all the help they can get.

:yo:

So, rebranding + winning didn't work, so let's re-brand and hope winning alone works?

What?

My ultimate point is - for the locals to truly embrace this franchise, the locals will need to feel like they own it. The Vegas market is too suddenly saturated to have a franchise dropped on their lap again and expect them to care about it. Rebranding the franchise to something they can call their own would be a step in local support for the franchise.

...And I'm not so sure even that will work. I don't see the A's moving to Vegas as a good move any way you slice it. I hope I'm wrong because we don't need another 40 years of that franchise pulling under 10K in attendance on full team payroll less than one Mets pitcher.

The Nats that year also had a losing record deep into the season before a red hot second half.

People will make a weekend trip to Vegas to see their team play, and it’s not far from LA either.

Rebranding is irrelevant

I understand the history. I'm taking the stance of an economic realist.

A decade ago, Las Vegas had zero major sports franchises. Locals took very well to their first new expansion Golden Knights they called their own and it has thrived. Like I said, the Raiders already had a very strong national following, so it wasn't difficult to draw attendance and support for that franchise from a national level (beginning with people traveling in to see games on Sunday). And unlike the Raiders that only have 8 or 9 home games to fill, the A's franchise is going to have 82 games in a now suddenly saturated market with not much initial interest from the locals. Getting the locals to go to games won't be as easy this time.

The AAA team in Vegas, which is an A's affiliate, have very strong attendance. I think the locals will embrace them, if not immediately, eventually.

Agree that the organization really needs to change how they do things. I know the owner doesn't like to spend, which is fine if you find some other way a la the Rays. The have a decent history of rebuilding and have a good farm system, if you look at them the last 20 years or so, they have a pattern, they build a good team and finish 1st or 2nd in there division for 3-5 years, they sell off the good players they built up and go bottom for 3-5 years, rinse repeat. They need to get out of the mentality of building up and then selling off.

The Raiders already had a huge following in Vegas. Lots of California transplants here.

Thing is, the Aviators were really the only pro sports team in Vegas for a long time. It makes total sense that they'd get good support in that situation. The situation has changed, though; and I'm not so sure they're gonna embrace the A's franchise in Vegas.

If the A's were moving to another major metropolitan market where they'd be one of the only major pro sports franchises in town - an identity change would be irrelevant; the locals would be happy they'd have something new to support. In Vegas, they just got two new things to support and don't really need or want a third.

All Las Vegas teams are shitty.

Wrong. The Athletics are a very old & history rich franchise. They have to stay as is.

You are a Vegas local; what's your take on the A's coming to town?
Fuck the As. I also read an article just now. The only thing secured is the land. They don't even have plans for the stadium drawn up, or an approved budget. There is no money in place to build anything. This is still not a done deal by any means

I love when Rod comes into other threads just so everyone can see how much of a retard he is. Fucking tubby.

Next give SLC their expansion team!
Kinda hoping this happens. Didn't realize how big of a market they had until recently when i heard this is an option. Wouldn't mind another high altitude team. Not bad attendance at their AAA team as well.

SLC goat western city. Would be cool for them to get a professional sportsball team.
