PAC News

I've wondered all along why the Big XII doesn't go recruit the F out of the top remaining PAC teams, including Oregon and Washington, by (a) showing them the $$$$ and splitting the Conference into the Pacific Division and the Plains Division. A little sugar and some money go a long ways toward making people like you.

For all we know they are.

Hence Kliavcoff's desperation attempt at a media rights deal hoping to hold things together.

I think Yormark and the B12 have handled this round of realignment with as much realism as they can. I’m sure Washington and Oregon have standing invites and they know it. But going harder after P5 programs that are more likely to say yes and most likely to stay is the best play.

It’s like Yormark trying to grab basketball Schools. Sure realignment is all about football, but having some great basketball programs is a nice bargaining chip when talking about post season tournaments for hoops and If there ever is a breakaway being part of that.

The B12 realizes they’ll never be in the top 2 when it comes to football, but being #3 at least puts them in the conversation of a seat at the table.

I've seen other reports that it's around that $20m mark as well. Also, that's it's almost exclusively streaming, but Apple could bid out some games to ESPN. It's not gonna be good enough.

BYU, Baylor and TCU? I thought Cal didn't want anything to do with religious based schools.
Always remember why these universities have football teams to begin with… money.
Those kinds of excuses are used when there “is no interest” in school ____ and the reason that there is no interest is because the media partners say they won’t pay X amount for the conference to invite em, not religious beliefs ect. Notre Dame can call any conference it wants tonight and be accepted asap to any conference it chooses in about 10 minutes, nobody gives a rip about their religious beliefs.

Just a few years ago the Big12 was holding its Beauty contest for potential new members and BYU was an absolute no go “due to them not playing on Sundays”. No way no how ect.
Fast forward to 2023 the circumstances have changed, the money is there to at least survive and now they are all one big happy family.
If it means Cal’s or any other school’s program making millions of dollars less or joining a conference that will at least be closer to the big2… then they are gonna go, they have to.

I've never even thought of them going after Cal or Cal having interest but based on the California argument it would make sense. I see three problems:

1. The Big 12 can't go hard after Cal as Cal has to start the dialog first or its potential tampering. I'm not sure Cal would move fast enough for that to happen. The Big12 can't let big schools like AZ, ASU and Utah get away if they can land them.
2. Does the Cal bd of trustees want to be part of the Big 12 as that is a whole different culture?
3. If all this goes down my strong suspicion is that Oregon and Washington follow and the Big 12 has to leave spots open so who at that point is left out? There are only so many spots you can fill.
Yea all of these moves are made in private for legal reasons and I’m am 100% certain that these deals and silent/open invitations have been in the works since the rumors started flying months ago. Same with the BIG and SEC moves in the past. Who all is in play and who has contacted who is never known until the AD’s and presidents are having the press conferences and… that’s how it has to be.

I firmly believe that no matter who else the Big12 gets from the PAC, if Oregon and UDub want in then there is going to be spots for them as well. The idea has already been brought up anyway:

If this turns out to be the case, the PAC is done, right?

I mean it's one thing to be behind the SEC and B1G, but $10 million behind the B12 and the ACC, and having most of it streaming on Apple puts a dagger into it.

- Other 3 corner schools to B12. They are now 16.
- The B1G is no longer seen as a poacher, so they get Ore and UW for partial deals.
- The deal is kiboshed, and the PAC rebuilds into a best-of-the-west G5 conference, hoping to maintain its P5 status.
- The SEC stands pat.
- The ACC schools whine a lot, but really can't do anything.
- Pure chaos at the G5 level as schools scramble to join what is left of the PAC.

The Pac as we know it is done. They can fill with MWC teams but it's not going to be the same.

I'm still not sold on Oregon/UW to the B1G. I always come back to the fact they'd be there by now if they really wanted them. I don't know if the escalator clause applies to them or just ND. SC and UCLA also might not want them so they are the only show on the West Coast.

Maintaining P5 status doesn't mean much now with the 12 team playoff. The top 6 winners go no matter what league they are in.

I wouldn't rule out Oregon, UW, Cal and Stanford to the ACC either. Or some type of merger. Cal and Stanford fit the academic part and Oregon and UW have the brand to go with FSU, Clemson and Miami. That leaves the corner 3 to the B12 for 16, and Oregon State and Washington State to the MWC. Which will give them 14. ACC has 18. It doesn't make sense geographically, but that ship sailed along time ago.

If it goes down like you’ve stated and it’s certainly reasonable that it will then most of the G5 targets are in the MWC that make sense. At that point the PAC takes 6 schools from the MWC which is the majority so that conference folds and no school has to pay a buyout.

If they don’t go that route it’s going to be tough getting schools because we aren’t talking big pockets and punitive GORs in place. Plus you have to think the PAC network deal shrinks even more.

That's what I was talking about with Cal. Those girls they thought were ugly ain't so ugly when they are the only ones at the dance.

Yep. P5 in name only. There are only two that are "power"...at least at the financial level.

If you think Oregon/UW to the ACC is more likely than Oregon/UW to the Big Ten...I don't know what to tell you

I didn't say it was more likely. If ASU, Utah and Zona go the B12, they need a home. I just don't know if the B1G invite is going to come. Maybe it will, but it's not looking like any time soon.

I have a feeling this announced deal is going to be very underwhelming. They're going to be looking to move, if the B12 doesn't want to go past 16, and they don't get a B1G invite, where else are they going to go? Honestly, if they don't get invited to the B1G, at least Oregon, should explore Independent. Throw the other sports in the WCC. I'd guess they can get more than $32m on the open market to have their football games televised.

Oregon isn't going to the ACC. Oregon isn't going Independent.

IIRC any new member to the ACC has to sign that GOR everyone is desperate to get out of. So I can't see anyone, even desperate PAC members, crazy enough to do that.
