What are you reading?

I usually read one Discworld book a year...usually when I need something light and fun.

I will have it done by the weekend.

leaving for Bora Bora on Sunday and I have my Kindle loaded with some good ones...

ended up not starting any of these last night...but I still have them.

decided to read Fall of Babel by Josiah Bancroft so I can finish that series.

I will probably read Homeland along with it though...I want to start the Drizzt books.

The Bat

INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • In the electrifying first installment of the New York Times bestselling series, Harry Hole of the Oslo Crime Squad is dispatched to Sydney to observe a murder case. As he circles closer to the killer, Harry begins to fear that no one is safe, least of all those investigating the murder.

I think I read that one a while back. I have a friend that loves his books.

the translation is a bit weird sometimes though

Gardens of the Moon is the start of my all time favorite series, Malazan Book of the Fallen. I just started some of the prequel novels.
it's been on my to read list for a while, but I just haven't been ready to start a new epic fantasy novel.

2025 might be the time to do it

Yeah it is ten long books and the scale is just massive. It does tend to be a very hit or miss series for people though, they usually either love it or hate it. There isn’t really a protagonist nor antagonist, there are 141 pov characters.

Wheel of Time is also great. It has some all time epic moments in fantasy, absolutely badass wizardry. It drags a bit in the middle of the series but has a brilliant ending. The audiobooks are quite good if you wanted to go that route. I still prefer Malazan but you can’t go wrong with Wheel of Time.

Just finished reading Evan Winter's two books:
The Rage of Dragons
The Fires of Vengeance

Well worth your time. If you're a fan of Pierce Brown's "Red Rising" series, you will like this quite a bit.

I finished up Wheel of Time this month. Didn't do a ton of heavy reading, so the 14-book series took me the entirety of 2024. Really enjoyable series. With anything that long, there's some down moments where the pace slows quite a bit.

The general outline of the flow is:
- books 1-5 you get to know the main characters and the plot is really character driven
- books 6-10 the author takes a step back and you explore the world more (this, especially books 8-10 is considered the slog where the plot pacing slows down a lot)
- books 11-13 all the major players are in place and the final battle is set up
- book 14 is basically all the final battle

There's an extra companion book called New Spring which is kind of a prequel focused on some of the characters from the main series, but that is a completely optional read that you can choose to dive into or not after you complete the main story.

The payoff is good and overall the series is well worth your time IMO.

I'm gonna hop into the Brandon Sanderson Cosmere next and begin with the Mistborn trilogy.
