so in that scenario, us and costa Rica tied on GD and we get play in game? CR is in good form right now.

No, they have to beat us in goal differential, that's why it has to be six. A five-goal loss has the US and CR even on points and differential, but US has a ten-goal cushion on goals scored, so they'd get tiebreaker 2.

CR could potentially bounce Mexico to the playoff game, but that involves Honduras getting its only win of the round.

Most likely outcome for qualification is Mexico finishes second, US finishes third, and CR goes to the playoff and probably beats NZ/Solomon Islands. US 2/Mexico 3 is still possible if both of them draw or the US wins. The US losing by a bunch and Mexico losing by a bunch (would have to be like 4-0 CR and 2-0 Honduras) is less likely than CR winning by 6, IMO.

The US missing this WC would be worse than the last cycle, because they don't even have to get a point, they just don't have to be annihilated.

Costa Rica has 4 key players sitting on yellow cards. Yellow cards carry over for the playoff. Likely they sit those players to save them for the playoff. In reality, that is their best hope not the game with the USA.

Not just CONCACAF. European World Cup Playoffs if you got your second yellow in last Group Stage game, you could not play in first game of playoff. Not sure who was suspended in first game of playoffs. If you had one yellow, that was cleared for the playoffs so no one suspended for final. Did Italy have any suspensions for the North Macedonia game? Not sure.

What a joke the African qualifiers were today with the lasers. Salah got screwed and so did Egypt goaltender. Should replay the penalities with no fans but not going to happen.
