Alright this shitshow has gone on long enough.
Fields is a good QB but not great. He has a lot of room to improve, but that wasn't happening in Chicago with the dogshit coaches they had (you even Getsy is complete shit and Flus is a DC at best). They brought in DJ Moore and he had a career year with Fields throwing him the ball. The OL improved marginally but was still a bottom-third unit in the NFL. I'm not sure what QB was going to come in dealing with that shit for their first 3 years and thrive, but obviously Fields didn't. He is still very young and obviously has a lot of potential, and hopefully if Chicago trades him it isn't to another garbage offensive staff (I'm seeing Pittsburgh, who just hired Arthur Smith as their OC, so probably not much would change under that fucking idiot).
Am I rooting for him because he's a Buckeye? Obviously. Does that mean everything I've said about how Chicago has fucked up his development is wrong? Absolutely not. Say whatever you want about how bad he is or how he's "THE problem", I really don't care.
Again, that comment was directed at the importance of the position as much as it was at him. When the QB needs improving...it is THE problem.
I agree with the rest for the most part, tho I will say, there are nuances within all that, that can be put on him. While he improved a bit after coming back from his injury, his 4th quarter play, and clutch play, if you will, was still lacking. Look at some of these stats, if yiou'll indulge me?
53.4 passer rating in the 4th quarter this year
8 games where Fields began a drive in the final 8 minutes, with a chance to tie or go ahead...the Bears only scored once. He is now 3 for 23 in such situations for his career. Gut-wrenching losses to the Bucs, Broncs, Lions and Browns this year.
Six 4th quarter INTs. Surpassed only by Sam Howell who had 76 more attempts and Jordan Love, who had 81 more attempts.
And maybe this one bugs the most, because it always brings up the o-line deficiencies, but his sack rate is atrocious. 10.6% this year. 31st rank. Bagent in his 4 games had a 3.4% sack rate. For his career,, Fields has a 12.4% sack rate. The 6 other Bears QBs during that time?...6.0%
And yes, I realize he's wanting bigger plays and trying to push it down the field more, but that's not enough to validate the discrepancy, nor is the WR separation argument, as there only maybe 10 WRs good enough to make a substantial separation to even measure.
The kid needed better coaching for sure. That is evident in his consistently lackadaisical dropback, massive wind up and pocket inaccuracy.
I like the kid plenty, and won't be heart broken if they decide to keep him, but he is wildly overhyped and handled far too often with kid gloves when it comes to evaluating him, not just by you either. There has to be some accountability to the things HE can control, like the aforementioned drop back en sech.
