What ya muscicians learning?

As far as what I’m learning, I heard this for the first time in years on the way to work this morning, it’s gonna be the next song I learn

I have a 75 dollar Japanese fiddle that sounds just as good as the one I’d rather not say how much I spent on. I learned the fiddle pretty quick. The hardest thing for you would probably be getting used to no frets and getting smooth with the bow.
In my neighborhood right now:

I'd probably go with that second one, even though it's a 3/4 size

Basic to fundamentals. Many years ago I started off all wrong with power/open chords and the minor pentatonic scale. I can play covers and maybe a few licks but never developed any sound foundation of where every root note is and trying to have a better understanding of how songs and leads are written.

So right now I’m learning every position of each mode of the major scale. Going and down each position with out fuck ups at 60 bpm, then 80, then 100, etc. Minimum 1 hour each day. Working in some melodic sequences within each scale. It’s really hard to go slow and keep my timing with the metronome.

For now just working on mastering all seven modes of the major scale. This week I’m on C major. I’ll probably stay in the major scale for a long time as I build in triads and arpeggios, etc. then later move into Dorian, Lydian, etc. come back full circle with the pentatonic.

Use banjo picks on the mandolin too.
Hey IP, I'm thinking of getting a mandolin. I'll probably go cheap but I don't wanna go so cheap that I'll get a piece of junk that's unplayable. You got a recommendation?

I don’t currently have one, the last one I had was an Ibanez. It was about 300 bucks new. I traded it for my guitar. It was a good one, but I haven’t ever had a cheapo mandolin to review. I’m sure you could get a used Ibanez pretty reasonable though

Thanks man, I seen a couple of those advertised on CL and Sweetwater. Also seen a Stadium brand acoustic-electric, I like the idea of having one I can plug in

The cool thing about a mandolin though is that it’s chorded the same as a fiddle. Learn the mandolin and get used to finger placement, that’ll help with the no frets on the fiddle and all you’d really need to learn is how to use the bow

I’ve never had one I could plug in, but when I get a new one, it’ll have that option

Im so into it and enjoying it so much, I'm going to purchase a new Taylor acoustic. Looking at the Academy 12e or the 114e. Currently paying on a Yamaha 411. It's not bad, but the feel and sound on a new Taylor is way better.

Taylors are the shit. My #1 guitar is a 314ce. The thing just sounds great. I change the strings once a month, and the first week or so, it just sounds and feels so crisp. I love it.

A bit more than I would be able to fork out right now. Might have to save a little longer. But yeah, that's a very worthy goal. Now I want to try one.

I saw a really cool looking "Mandocaster" on Amuhzahn, but the reviews on it were horrible. I'd basically be paying for cuteness, not playability

That’s a sharp looking one for sure. To me personally, the gourd shaped mandolins have a better sound, but they’re not as easy on the eyes as the ones with the curl(the name for that style is escaping me right now)

Think they call the curlicued ones "F-style" and the gourd shaped ones "A-style"

Not to be confused with the F-shaped holes in the bodies, which can be used on both types

I got mine from Sam Ash, and they were running a special, like 0% financing forever, or something.

I'd actually love to upgrade it, but my damn kids need braces and educations and shit.

I think my next purchase will be a Taylor GS mini-bass. I've heard those are supposed to be amazing.

Man, somebody was advertising a Gretsch New Yorker for 200$, with a case and strap. But I think they already sold it because the ad went away. I don't think they make those anymore, this might have been a collectible

That would have been a sweet deal. I'm sure it wasn't on the market long at that price

The owner put the ad back up! I contacted him and offered to buy, just waiting for him to respond
Well, that deal didn't happen. I was supposed to go check it out last Saturday but the dude stopped responding to my texts, and then the ad came down again. I guess somebody else got to it. Which is fine, just let me know so I don't keep texting you like a crazed MF'er.

I learnt CSNY's Marrakech Express this week. That's a fun, easy tune
