2024 Recruiting Thread

i'm sure there are players that staffs will go all in on so much that they would pretty much get the ok for whatever number it takes to get.. I think UT has that player in it's sights for this class (Colin Simmons)

ou is doing some work with getting Jackson and stone.. And who knows about the other DE that seems like a ou/UGA battle
No personal knowledge of this, but what appears to have put the breaks on the crazy money we heard that ATM was throwing around, and that we know UTjr and UF were throwing around, is this:

1. It immediately affected the locker room. People there for 4 years were getting way less than some 11th grade kid who had never played a down. This was an obvious situation that was going to happen. It's one thing to be happy with someone making bank because they have a huge social media following - they earned that. It's another thing when someone gets a ton of money for just showing up when that is all they did, too.

2. The donors realized that it just wasn't a good ROI. Those of us who have followed CFB know that some of the best HS QBs, as an example, fail. Tate Martel, anyone? The list is long and undistinguished. Can you imagine trying to estimate the success rate of OL? That's why UF backed out of their deal ... who could justify 13 million to a kid who likely wasn't going to be that good (most QBs aren't that good).

3. They saw that people coming to your school because of money only don't buy in. That's why ATM lost half their class - I kid, I kid. Seriously, though, culture fit is as big a thing as raw talent. Teams that win NCs have great culture and chemistry. It's why teams that win often have older players. Even 26 year olds. We see it in CBB ... the one and dones win every now and again, but teams with kids with good culture and older players win more often.

The market will work its way out. Hell, in 4-6 years, all players will have had the opportunity to get NIL coming in, so number 1 above will be moot, for the most part.

Will definitely be interesting to see how long it's sustainable for programs like Texas A&M and Miami to just keep throwing blank checks at kids pretty much. These "financers" are eventually going to get tired of ponying up tons of up front money for kids to either underperform or transfer out after a year or two.
Maybe at Miami, but not at A&M. Not sure you can find an example where A&M wanted to do something and we couldn't find the money for it.

Not gonna discount the locker room culture aspect and how important it is. IMO the bigger issue will be lack of wins. It's not that difficult to money whip a 4 or 5 star kid into a sales pitch where dollars are the biggest factor. Most of those top recruits want the money but more than that they want to play in the NFL. If they sit for two years or play and aren't getting noticed because the team around them sucks or is losing, then they will jump someplace they think can win. Sometimes that is a good move, sometimes it is short sighted because they jump and are sharing time with a younger recruit. It's why A&M had so many jump from their previous classes. 1) they saw the class of 2022 getting the priority last year, and rightfully so since they were higher rated recruits at some positions, and 2) the class of 22 knew they had at least 3 more years to figure it all out. The 2019-2021 classes see the dwindling time and the mindset of "if I haven't cracked the starting lineup by now, I probably won't" and so they jumped to usually teams with easier conferences. The small number (ahem) of 2022 that transferred out mostly did go to other P5 schools because they are highly rated and have that option to still try to start.

Yeah.. i would think Miami would be more in trouble when it comes to the money flow slowing down after subpar seasons

Aggys are all in on football and if it fails, they will pony up to buy out Jimbo.. get another coach and get the players he wants..

BTW if Jimbo fails, I bet they hire Jeff Traylor asap

Miami is starting to save their cash...gonna have to pay Mario's buyout soon

Oklahoma for Jackson

Yeah good get. Oklahoma just landed their seventh recruit since June 19th and predicted to get 3 five stars in by the end of the month.

Now just need him teammate David Stone to announce.

OU can grab some real momentum this year. They have a joke of a schedule. Toughest true road game is probably Kansas

Zion Ragins announces tomorrow. An OU/Georgia battle. Going to be hard to pull this kid out of Georgia but you never know.

I don’t really get excited about WRs anymore. Maybe someone that is really special (like 6’3” or bigger running a sub 4.4), but most of these guys I don’t really get bothered by. It’s the most abundant position in the portal. Services way over-rate these guys. It’s become a joke

Just to hammer it home. I looked at the ON3 industry rankings (that is the average of all services), that has 7 WRs in the top 24. That doesn’t include athletes like Bussey, who are likely to play WR at the next level. That is laughable. These are 7 on 7 rankings, not football rankings

I'm pretty sure Bussey is going to play defense

There are 2 athletes on the list and both are sub 6’, likely one plays WR. That really isn’t the point though. I am pretty comfortable saying 30% of the top 24 isn’t WRs in reality, especially since it is the most plentiful position in CFB

Don't think it's us. Not a lot of buzz at all for our last WR slot. The thinking is we are going to go all the way to ESD trying to get one of Smith, Matthews type 5*, or hit the transfer portal like we did last year.

Unless you are getting a ton of them like tOSU, Bama used to, and OU used to, it's a really hard position to predict. Think of the top guys that didn't make it at Bama the last few years. Same with OU to some degree.

It's not as hard as predicting OL, or even QB, but it's close. I mean McConkey for us was a 2*/3* and he is being mocked as top 10 in the NFL draft next year.

Not to mention that the top WRs are also prima donna types, most often. I guess it comes with the position.

Solid player. I saw a mock with him going 106th. Another one has him the 10th WR.. it’s more about the guy just in front of him, AD Mitchell. The #3 guy, Johnny Wilson, is a transfer also. Bama had a 1st round draft out of the portal. Addison drafted and portal guy. Malik Hyatt drafted portal guy. It’s just a position you can grab a quality starter out of the portal easily. Lot tougher to do that on the DL

Yeah, we lost our WR1/2 to those fuckers at Texas, but picked up WR1/2 from Mizzou, and WR1 from MSU.
