Easy answer is hotel btw.

Hotel = Gym, Pool, Sleep, Food
Airplane = Travel.

Fucking up your sleep wrecks shit. The worst part of air travel isnt even the plane, its the airport.
Really? I don't mind it. Get Pre-check or Clear and not really an issue for me. Don't mind the airport experience.

The worst business class I've been on (AA regional jet) was still better than their economy offering on the same plane. Free business would be well worth it, over any hotel.
If/when I ever had an international trip is probably when I'd be most likely to do something like that. Good chance I'm either sleeping one off or have a flight early in the morning so I'd be asleep anyway. I guess it's one of those I don't know what I'm missing because I've never ridden it things.

I actually think I might change my answer after reading some of the other posts here. Having a nice change-of-pace with a good pool and complimentary breakfast can be game changers depending on where I am/what I'm doing.

I would most likely save more money by having free hotels as long as I have the choice because I'd end up using them more if I can pick the owners suite or something. Usually a flight is a few hours and then the stay is a few days, so I don't think there would be a wrong answer on this one. I just hate flying and the extra space and amenities of business class make it a little more bearable.

The cost differential is one thing, and I guess that would vary by person.
I was wondering how y’all would tackle the problem.
the way I see it:
Having free flights let’s you be spontaneous. At any point, you can say things like, “Hey, there’s a cool concert at Red Rocks this weekend. Imma catch a plane and head out.” Or, “The French made the World Cup Final. It’d be cool to be in Paris for the championship game night.”
Whereas if you had free hotel stays, with just a little planning, you can, Let’s say, take a flight to DC, stay a couple of nights, head up to Ocean City Maryland for some blue crab, spend night, head up to Philly, etc.
Or save up some flight money and head to Hawaii and spend a couple of weeks there with free lodging.

Easily airline travel.

Explain yourself.

good “4 star hotels” are plentiful and all around the same price (in a given area). in other words, it’s easy to find and budget for them. However, a business class ticket can be hard to get and the prices may vary a lot. Much harder to secure and not easy to budget for them.

So inherent in your argument is that you much prefer business class to coach

yes. That’s very fair to say.

in fact, if you switched it to a free coach ticket I’d probably pick hotel

That’s what inherent means. Yes. 😄

which did you pick?
Hotels. I’m more of a planner. So I’d plan trips ahead to get cheap airfare. I don’t mind coach all that much.
And I’d love to stay a few nights for free, head to the next city, stay there for free, etc.
plus, I’d get lots of utility from free hotels out of road trips from Austin.

so really this exercise comes down to the class of service on the flight.

I’m assuming you live in Texas. If that’s true your longest avg domestic flight is 4 hours. Is that fair to say? I fly a lot (or I did before Covid) and my flights were longer. Plus, bc I flew a lot there were lots of delays. Having the larger seats on longer flights and longer days at the airport bc of delays really made a difference for me.

I also stayed at “nicer” hotels. I usually stayed at a Hilton or Marriott which is fine for me. Give me a king size bed, ice cold AC, a refrigerator in the room and room service late and I’m good.

Just curious. How many times a month/year (on average) do you fly?
