I think you, and many, are operating on a false premise that the NCAA rules are clearer than they actually are relating specifically to this case. We both agree if a coach went to a game and scouted, this would be case closed. This wasn't a coach or UM staff member going to games.
What I said from the start is that this was ultimately stupid because (repeated a gross number of times) sign stealing is legal. So we're knit picking about how the sign stealing information is collecting. Yes, it's probably easier with someone in the stands. No, it's probably not the advantage you're trying to suggest it is. And all teams operate under the idea that the other teams are stealing sings, and go through great lengths to change, alter and prevent the other team from doing so. So the mechanism already exists and was in practice for teams to prevent what Michigan was doing.
