DAMN!!!! That was a hit.

Talkin Habs/Jets. You guys see it? Daaaayyuuum.
Just saw the highlight on replay. Scheifele on Jake Evans... about as nasty as it gets. Will be a war in Game 2 and Scheifele is a marked man.

All the French Canadians are crying right now. It appears anytime a player is hurt they want DoPS to suspend for a decade… that’s a clean hit.

The only thing nasty about it, is the situational context and the fact he dips his head at the very last second. I don’t understand when we went from laughing at Lindros for having his head down all the time to making martyrs out of guys who dip their heads to try and draw penalties.

Not at all a "clean hit". There was zero purpose for that hit other than to take the guy out AFTER the play. It's disgusting and those type of plays no longer belong. This isn't old time hockey any more.

Scheifele was actually close enough that if he would have dove with his stick out, he had a chance to tip the puck.

1. Contact is made before the puck crosses the goal line. The "play" was very much not over.
2. Dude has his head up and checks his rearview before he even touches the puck, he knew he was coming. Immediately puts his head down as soon as the puck is on his stick.
3. You admit yourself that Scheifele was close enough to possibly make a play on the puck, so he should have simply peeled off? Not to mention, dive with his stick out on a wrap around play? So you want him to blow out his shoulder running into the post?
4. When did hockey become basketball?

The hit was clean if analyzed by technical procedure - i.e. no targeting of the head; elbow down, etc.

The hit was dirty if analyzed with environmental and emotional context. - i.e. Schiefele decided about 20 feet before contact that he was going to play the body instead of the puck and unloaded with full force with no concern for Evans' safety.

In that same vein, Evans also had no concern for his own safety on that play because he saw Scheifele coming and was going to put that puck in the net regardless of consequences.

It was a brutal hockey play.

The refs called it exactly as they should've - 5 minute charging major and a game misconduct. The league does need to suspend Scheifele for at least one game so that the series doesn't become a bloodbath of retaliation and so that players know Scheifele did cross the line when he dismissed player safety and trucked a dude into tomorrow.

If he wasn't going to actually play the puck then yes he should have given up on the play. There was a minute left in the game and he decided he was going to take out his frustration on a defenseless player. This isn't acceptable in 2021 hockey, sorry.

And I've seen plenty of highlights showing remarkable defensive plays where athletes dive out to stop a shot, make a catch, ECT without causing injury to themselves. He wouldn't have had to crash into the post.

It's my opinion and you don't have to agree. It's just that I won't agree with yours if you insist the play was clean.

So a player on a team down by one with a minute left should just give up on a play in a playoff game. Woof. I'm not even old enough to remember "old time hockey" and just...woof.

Dude looked up, saw a train coming and still stood on the tracks and we're blaming the train. Bless 2021 society.

All of this, minus the sussy

No further punishment? Fine?
Meh, fine him, whatever.

As you (and I) said, the context is what made this situation "bad".

If Scheifele makes that hit .5 seconds earlier, he takes out Evans(including the injury) and stops the puck, the Jets go coast-to-coast and score to tie the game, we're not even talking about the hit. Scheifele is getting on a Wheaties box and we're talking about the play of the year.

Instead, the game immediately becomes "out of reach" because Evans scores and we're labeling Mark as a dirty player (who had 6 minors in almost 60 games...) who was taking his frustrations out.

I give Evans credit, he did what he could to score. Made sure his eyes were on the puck to seal the game. That's playoff hockey, equally is skating 200 feet to lay the body on someone with a minute left and down by 1.

He did give up. He in no way tried to stop the goal. Destroying somebody after the goal is scored does nothing to help your team. He committed the charge out of frustration.

For sure. This series might get ugly if retaliation occurs.

Tough. Idk I would call it clean. Scheifele was clearly trying to get there fast enough to stop the wrap around and he hit him really hard as a result. I have not taken the time to slow it down and see if he hit him in the head, though from my initial watching of it live, I did not think it was high. I think a charging penalty makes perfect sense though.

I don't think Scheifele throwing his stick out there in a poke check is a good way to defend what Evans was doing though. Not to mention that for him to even get that close to do that, he would have to have been moving so fast and he would have either hit the net, possibly injuring himself or going for what I think he saw as a clean hit to stop someone with the puck from scoring.

Scheifele has no history of anything like this, I bet he regrets the injury happening, but I think most players in that situation would have done the same thing. In fact, if they didn't, I would be worried. Still doesn't mean it wasn't charging.

Again, this didn't happen. His shoulder made contact before the puck crossed the goal line. A half, hell quarter second earlier, he changes the path of the puck and makes the play of the year.

People are talking like this is like it's Dale Hunter on Pierre Turgeon.

There's no way the refs blow the play dead if the puck doesn't go in the net.

So profoundly fucking stupid. Reaves and Wilson get a combined half of what Scheifele gets for complete bush league after whistle shit, but Shef gets punished due to the fact the dude got injured. Punish the outcome, not the intent. DoPS is trash.

Rask was insane except for not being able to hold the post on a play I think he makes 99% of the time and the B's regain home ice advantage with a 2-1 OT win in Long Island.

Another POV.

Upon the replays and being able to see these breakdowns, I do agree that with @Wingsauce7 when I believe he said that Scheifele could have made a play on the puck. Initially, I didn't think he could have made a proper attempt at poking the puck away. When I am looking at some of these still frames, he was certainly close enough to try.

Idk, it's tough. Kinda like both of the guys in these videos said, it is a weird play. The hit does look clean to me, I still think the charging call is completely fair. My view is more in line with the first video, but I understand where the guy in this video is coming from.
