Well, I never really had a team. Always leaned toward the Blackhawks or the Islanders, but never really thought of them as my team. Then the Vegas shooting happened, the hockey team came out and did a bunch to help raise spirits, they were a team of players not worthy of protection that made a spectacle in honor of the city and went to the Finals in year one when no one really even gave them a chance to make the playoffs. They seemed to just run on hype or a drive that felt like a brotherhood connection and I just really liked and respected that. So then I started rooting for them throughout the season, the playoffs (then I saw the pregame playoff shows which were awesome lol).... and I felt comfortable enough to say that they are my team.
It just felt right. I still like the Blackhawks and Islanders, but it isn't the same as it is with VGK. I actively root for the Knights and get excited annnnnd I just more or less hope the Blackhawks and Islanders win lol.
you got it. This team really embraced this city when that happened and it was genuine. Hockey guys are the best professional athletes of all the major sports. Very down to earth.
During their first year here my buddy was taking his very young son to eat at a restaurant. They went to a local casino (not on the strip) and he was wearing a Fleury jersey. Some lady walks up to him (he was very young. Maybe 7?) and asks him if fleury was his favorite player. He very excitedly said “yes”! She asked if he wanted to meet him? Before he could answer the lady called out “hey Marc... come here”. It was fleurys wife and she had called him over. He stayed talked to my buddy’s kid and took several pics. Very very cool!
They are great guys.
