Eh, they won a title* in the most watered down season of the CFP era. Below average seasons for OSU, Clemson, Georgia, LSU. A bottom 5 Bama team of the entire Saban era. It was michigan's best team ever and they narrowly beat some very mediocre teams. This is literally their program's pinnacle: cheating like mad and winning a title without having to beat any truly great teams. It's the perfect embodiment of "pure michigan".

The Most Retarded Fan Base In America of course can't see that this is the peak, it's all downhill from here. They legit think there is going to be absolutely no drop off at all when Harbaugh splits.

Michigan can't do much more than this I guess

Wrong. I think what you're seeing is a fan base that has reached peak sports happiness. Michigan will probably win another national title at some point in the next 2-3 decades, Michigan probably won't do so after going 1-15 in the previous stretch against Ohio State, after being bombarded all season by nonsense accusations and then proceeded to win without a HC, beat OSU for the 3rd time in a row (and the last time the regular season game has any kind of real implications), retire Nick Saban and shut everyone up with a national title win. It was just a perfect story, one that won't probably ever be replicated. We've reached sports nirvana. We get to walk around telling everyone to die mad, and it's awesome.

We always expected a worse season next year for a variety of reasons, and I don't think that changes even if Harbaugh comes back (our schedule and future schedules are crazy - and CFB and what wins means is changing with the playoffs). What I would expect is that no matter who is the coach, Michigan probably will be able to recruit better with either Harbaugh confirmed staying for a longer term (if he comes back and signs this massive contract) or with Moore at the helm. And with a consistent culture/coaching staff, it's unlikely Michigan will be shoved back into the Hoke/RR era. So I'm good. I'm going to wear my natty gear around, be happy and I've realized that nothing can beat the feeling I have right now (not even if Michigan did it again next year).

We may seem that way ... we have just been a bit too much. Add on the current success of the Detroit Lions and you can see why we may appear "Retarded" (in your infantile words). Mea Culpa. If life is hard wear a helmet (thank you Candace Owens)!!!

I think it's better at least if Harbaugh comes back.

If He doesn't the big question will be roster retention.

I think you're looking at about 8-4 with a new coach if they can retain a good amount of the better players.

With Harbaugh i'd expect it to be more like 10-2 (9-3 at worst)

For a new coach the real test would be in years 2 and 3.

I don't think money is the hangup, he really wants those protections from if the NCAA decides to come knocking.
According to the report today, he got that. From Sam Webb 30 min ago:

Sources tell me the highlights are as follows…

  • Contract would make Harbaugh the highest paid coach in college football.
  • Elevator clauses to ensure Harbaugh remains the highest paid coach in college football
  • immunity from termination for two current NCAA investigations (this is similar to the provision in Bill self’s contract excerpted below)
  • One-year payout for termination with cause
Harbaugh has immunity from the current investigations, AND if he got fired for cause for anything else in the future he'd get a 1 year payout still. This is as much of a lifetime contract as anyone can get in college.

@fordman84 can you make me a mod for this thread? I only need about 10 minutes so I can delete it and stop the incessant bitching and then you can have the powers back.

Thanks

If Harbaugh comes back, I think the biggest impact will be the potential of keeping Minter.

Moore is clearly the smart move considering Michigan's situation, I think until the NCAA investigations are complete you're gonna be hard pressed to get anyone promising to sign on to a school that could possibly face sanctions in the nearish future.

We will see how egos play out though if Harbaugh leaves, Ono is a man of gigantic ego and I bet he's not going to be too happy that the guy he's jumped all in on defending from everything left him. Cooler heads may prevail but he also could get butthurt enough to push to outcast any Harbaugh disciples.

Some random non Moore higher right now could push y'all back to the brink of the Rich Rod/Hoke Eras.

No one cares about the NCAA investigation. Nothing the NCAA will do will impact us as fans or a program. Our administration functionally supports doing what the NCAA is going to do, and then ignoring them.

If Harbaugh leaves, Moore is the perfect choice for a variety of reasons (namely his proven experience leading the team with one arm held behind his back). But also in culture and coaching staff retention. Harbaugh probably takes Minter, but I think that's where the bleeding would stop. Michigan probably elevates co-DC Steve Clinkscale to the full DC position (given his track record with the secondary, and now history under both Minter and Macdonald). So we'd be looking for a new secondary coach, a new OC and potentially a new special team's guy if Jim took his son with him. This would likely keep a significant chunk of our returning roster still in place as well. You bring someone else in and the transfer portal probably hits hard.

If you think aspiring coaches won't take that into account, yea retarded.

The problem is Ohio State is willing to chip in to make him the highest paid coach in the NFL.

No. No one gives a shit. What would they have to consider? Michigan is one of the best jobs in the country, they'd have full support from the AD and fans, and they'd be making millions of dollars.

They probably would want to make sure they are going to come into a school about to be hit with scholarship reductions and probation. Not saying this will happen but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

I still don't think it's about money. Harbaugh wants a Super Bowl. He can't get that at Michigan
At this point, though, there's nothing in the way from a Michigan standpoint. Everything is on the table. If he leaves, it isn't because we didn't do something to keep him. Which has been the worry up to this point.

So Tennessee commits 200 instances of like 17 level 1 violations. Lets just say the NCAA punishes michigan equally....you think those relatively nonsense penalties would prevent someone from coaching here? I don't. Scholarship reductions really mean little in the era of the transfer portal.

Harbs seems to care if he wants immunity in his contract.

I'm assuming Harbaugh, if he comes back, doesn't want to come back only for the NCAA to find him culpable because of the new rules that allow the NCAA to punish head coaches for the actions of their staff, and then for Michigan to fire him for cause (after turning down huge NFL contracts to come back). It was only 3 years ago that he was inches away from being fired.

This, obviously, wouldn't apply to someone else hired from outside the program.
