A golf lesson isn't going to help me. Consistent lessons, yeah.




I bought my clubs the summer after 8th grade.... I don't think buying new ones is too fucking outrageous
 
Depends how high you can carry your 5 iron. If you hit it low then probably not. If you can hit it high and stop it on a green then I would say carry a 5 iron.

No, but you really need to understand what they're for.

You can't say that when you can't hit a 7 iron to the green, that your next choice is a 5 wood. There should be like 50 yards difference between those 2 clubs.

My nephew just started and bought some clubs at a second-hand store. The set had a 2-iron. I told him that belonged in a museum.

Also gave him this tip:

Golf isn't cheap, and you end up wasting money in the long run if you don't learn any fundamentals along the way.

Guy on my golf league team had the same shitty swing for years. Never got better (or much worse). Was never interested in any instruction and it showed. I don't understand that thinking.

What's going to help me the most is just playing more consistently.

FWIW, my swing doesn't really suck. Main issue is consistency, and tendency to try too hard (straight mental). I've had plenty of lessons in my life, they were all just between 7th grade and junior year.

Because it's a hobby...

Same reason why I never took lessons when I hopped in net playing ice hockey... you realize you're not going to go pro, so you're just out there to have fun.

I agree with you that lessons would be the best thing to spend money on, but he could also use new clubs if what he is hitting is 20 yrs old.

The Mavrik clubs do claim to go further, so not surprised there with him maybe getting 20 more yds out of this clubs...but to have his 7 go further than his 6...that's weird.

I have given this book to a couple friends who are trying to figure stuff out.

It is extremely helpful.

Because the new 7 iron is probably lofted similarly to my old 5 iron.

What Is the Loft Angle of Irons?
 
I don't even have a 6-1 iron in my bag. I can't hit long irons for shit. Instead I use a hybrid and a 7 wood.

Paying some martian to teach me how to be a better middle aged hobbyist doesn't compute.

Aren't you a "golf instructor" yet you hit a house last week? How do they even vet "instructors"?

eh I hit a house because I didn't check my yardage. I hit the ball clean and really well...but thought I was further out than I was.

I should have hit a bump and run with my 7 iron, not a full swing with my approach wedge.

but I think it is much less of a change between 2000 and today compared to the change from 1965 to 2000.

still, you are murdering your 7 iron...and you should hit your 5W 5 yds further than your 7I, like Fish said.

so maybe having a couple clubs between your 6I and your 5W would be a good idea...
