That's autoflower.I imagine they could be but I don't believe that isn't what the article is going for. The way I read what is happening with these new genetically altered plants is the plant begins the flowering process immediately. Where currently we wait several weeks before we cut light back to force plants to start flowering. We do that so the plant builds up mass to support bud growth. This somehow bypasses that requirement.
Autoflowers just automatically flower, and have nothing to do with light cycles, like the traditional plant.
